Thinking about the Poem :

Question 1.
i. Find in the first stanza three things that cannot happen in a treeless forest.
Answer:
In a treeless forest, no bird can sit, no insect can hide, no sun can bury its feet or rays in shadow.

ii. What picture do these words create in your mind. ……. sun bury its feet in shadow ………? What could the poet mean the sun’s feet?
Answer:
This line ……. Sun bury its feet in shadow….’ creates a picture as if sun is a human being having limbs and is trying to hide its feet in the shadow of the trees in the forest. But the actual meaning of this line is that in a treeless forest there shall be no shadow where the sun could enter to show its light.

The sun’s ‘feet’ indicates the sunlight or rays of the sun. The sun spreads light everywhere and penetrates even in the darkest of the forests to spread light and to take away shadows.

The Trees Class 10 Question Answer

Question 2.
i. Where are the trees in the poem? What do their roots do, and their leaves and their twigs?
Answer:
The trees are in the house. The roots try to free themselves from the cracks of the verandah floor, the leaves make efforts to move towards the glass (of the walls or windows) perhaps in search of light. The small branches or twigs become stiff as they try to pull themselves towards the light and big branches change their position frequently under the roof. They have to squeze in the limited space under the roof.

ii. What does the poet compare their branches to ?
Answer:
The poet compares them with the half dazed newly discharged patients coming out of the clinic doors.

Question 3.
i. How does the poet describe the moon (i) at the beginning of the third stanza, and (ii) at its end ? What causes this change ?
Answer:
In the beginning of the third stanza (i) the poet says that one can see the whole moon shining in the open sky. But in the end of the stanza he says that the moon seems to be broken like a mirror and its pieces shine in the crown of the tallest oak tree.

The change is caused by the shifting of the trees outside. First, the sky was open, no leaves covered any part of it because the trees were inside but when the trees got shifted outside, they covered a part of the sky. One could see only the flashes of the broken image of moon through the leaves.

ii. What happens to the house when the trees move out of it?
Answer:
Silence prevails in the house when the trees move out. There are no whispers of lichens or rustling of leaves.

The Trees Class 10 Question Answer

iii. Why do you think the poet does not mention the departure of the forest from the house’ in her letters ? (Could it be that we are often silent about important happenings that are so unexpected that they embarrass us ? Think about this again when you answer the next set of questions.)
Answer:
The poet does not mention about departure of the forest from her house in her letter because it was too sudden and unexpected. It left her embarrassed, shocked and dumb-stricken. Moreover, she had done something grossly wrong by bringing the trees in her house. It was her selfish motive to shift and use them for the interior decoration.

Taking away others”, liberty and disallowing them to breathe and grow in the open is a sin. One repents over one’s sins and avoids mentioning them to others out of shame. That could be the reason why she did not make any mention of trees in her letter.

Question 4.
Now that you have looked at the poem in detail, we can begin to ask what the poem might ‘mean’. Here are two suggestions. Can you think of others ?

i. Does the poem present a conflict between man and nature ? Compare it with ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’. Is the poet suggesting that plants and trees, used for ‘interior decoration’ in cities while forests are cut down, are imprisoned’ and need to break out?
इसकी तुलना ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’ से करो।
Answer:
Definitely the poem presents a conflict between man and nature. For our seflish motives we are being unjust to plants and animals. We use them for our pleasure, enjoyment and entertainment. In the poem ‘A Tiger in the Zoo’, the tiger is imprisoned in a small cage, away from natural home and fellow beings, feels restless and angry and longs to free himself.

Similarly, the plants inside the house feel suffocation and crave to come out and breath in the open in their natural home, that is forest. Isn’t it a sin to take away the liberty of others? We should not imprison plants or animals and let them live and enjoy themselves in their own habitat.

Additional questions short answer type questions

Answer the following questions in about 30-40 words.

Question 1.
Why is the description of the moon different in the beginning and at the end of the third stanza ?
Answer:
In the beginning of the third stanza the poet says that one can see the whole moon shining in the open sky but in the end the moon seems to be broken like a mirror and its pieces shine in the crown of the tallest oak tree. The change is caused by the shifting of the trees outside.

Question 2.
What is the central idea of the poem “The Trees’?
Answer:
The central idea of the poem is the conflict between man and nature. A plant is brought inside the house when it is a sapling. But as it grows into a tree, it gets suffocated with the limited space available. So it departs to feel free. The tree is thus moving out to occupy the now empty forest, made so by man’s indiscriminate felling of trees. Humans must understand the negative impact of their actions on nature and mend their ways before it is too late.

Question 3.
Justify the revolt of the trees and state two values which the man should possess to stop the revolt.
Answer:
The trees inside the house get suffocated as they grow. They try to free themselves from the cracks of the veranda floor and the leaves stretch out as if to move towards the glass. They are justified in their revolt. Men should learn the importance of trees.

Long answer type questions

Answer the following questions in about 100-150 words :

Question 1.
‘My head is full of whispers
Which tomorrow will be silent.’
‘Departure is painful’. So the departure of the trees is painful for the poetess. What will happen after their departure ?
Answer:
Just like the departure of someone close to us is painful, so is the departure of a tree. When they are planted as a sapling they look nice and enhance the beauty of our surroundings. But as they grow and spread out their branches, they look wild and require more space for their growth. The roots create cracks in the floor and the leaves stretch out as if to move towards the glass, perhaps in need of sunlight.

The soft twigs become strong and stiff. So the trees need to be removed from the house. No more do the leaves cover the sky, but the trees breathe and they are welcomed by the wind. The moon resembles a broken mirror, reflecting off the leaves. The poetess reveals that she will feel lonely after the trees’ departure.

Question 2.
“The trees inside are moving out into the forest,
The forest that was empty all these days. Will be full of trees by morning.’
How does the poem The Trees’ make a strong plea against deforestation ?
Answer:
The poem, “The Trees’ sends home a strong message against deforestation. At the beginning of the poem, the poetess indirectly highlights importance of trees when she says that if there is no forest, there is no place for birds to sit, insects to hide and the sun to bury its feet in shadow. As a sapling, the plant adds to the beauty of the surroundings when placed inside the house.

But as it grows, it spreads its branches, leaves and roots around. It gets suffocated unless it is brought into the open. Thus, in the poem, the trees are said to ‘depart from the house to be welcomed by the strong winds and the moon. But there is no forest inside the house any more, as there are no trees.

The poetess does not want to mention the departure of the forests as she feels guilty for merely looking silently at them as they depart. This way she subtly points out the thanklessness of man towards forests.

The Trees Class 10 Question Answer

Question 3.
“The forest that was empty all these days
Where no bird could sit
No insect hide
No sun bury its feet in shadow’
Explain the phrase “the forest that was empty all these days”. After reading the poem, for whom do you think are the forests needed ? Imagine you are a tree in a forest, what values would you like the humans to learn from the tree ? (100-120 words)
Or
What message does Adrienne Rich want to convey through her poem, “The Trees’?
Answer:
In her poem ‘The Trees’ poetess Adrienne Rich subtly drives home the message about the importance of trees. Without trees, the birds would not have a place to sit, insects will have no place to hide and the sun would not bury its feet in shadow. We enjoy the beauty of plants as they adorn the surroundings.

But slowly the tree spreads its roots, its branches and leaves and seems to yearn to go outside where it can live and grow without any restrictions. No more does the tree look attractive indoors. The trees are however welcomed into nature by strong winds and the moon. The author hereby emphasizes that trees need to be kept alive, but should not be ‘imprisoned inside the house as they look more beautiful, and tend to thrive outdoors – that is where trees belong to.
