Read this poem by B.R. Lakshman Rao:

GREEN SNAKE:
Early morning, the day before yesterday,
under a slab of stone,
in a crack,
eyes glittering,
forked tongue licking and flashing,
a frog swelling his belly,
he lay there quietly :
a baby snake, two hands long,
a green snake.
‘Poor thing. It’s a green snake. Still a baby.
What harm can it do ?’ I said.
My father replied,
‘A snake’s a snake.’
And mother,
‘That’s where everyone walks.
We don’t need trouble. Kill it.’
‘I can’t,’ I said.
Father struck him with a piece of firewood,
chased him outside, and killed him flat.

Question 1.
Discuss man’s attitude towards snakes in general as represented in the poem “The Snake Trying”.
आमतौर से मनुष्यों की साँपों के प्रति क्या धारणा होती है-कविता ‘दा स्नेक ट्राईंग’ के माध्यम से समझाएँ।
Answer:
Snakes may or may not be poisonous. So, all the snakes do not pose a threat to man. It is the man who always chases the snakes away with ‘pursuing’ sticks for no valid reason.

Whenever a snake is out in the open, he can rest peacefully only till the time he is not observed. Once he is noticed by the man, he is chased away. Man does not seem to understand that he is targeting an innocent creature who is ‘harmless even to children’.

The snake is an inhabitant of the planet earth and should be allowed to exist “without hurt”. Besides, man should learn to appreciate how ‘beautiful’ and ‘graceful’ a snake is.

He is also convinced of the snake’s innocence for the latter is harmless ‘even to children’. The creature has been relaxing under the sun along the sand and is chased away for no reason. According to W.W.E. Ross, the poet, the snake is not only innocent, but also has a ‘thin long body that curves into beautiful and graceful shapes.
