He lost himself in their world, so the material things did not matter. Then again, at the fair, he got attracted to sweetmeats, garlands and balloons. The little, lost boy was attracted by many things at the fair, but except for when he asked for a toy, and half-murmured the desire to have a burfi, the child never demanded anything. The child also displays a love of nature, respect and love for his parents, and a certain level of maturity for his age. This child pushed his way through people’s legs hoping to find his parents at the shrine. The kind man lifted him in his arms and brought him out of the crowd. He wanted to know whose child he was. There are many incidents of lost persons in the fairs. Many children lose their parents in such fairs. If we find such a person who is lost firstly we will try to make him or her calm and soothe. We will try to find out his address or the person with whom he or she has come to fair. We will make an announcement of his name from the lost and found stall. We will offer him some eatables or drinks to make him comfortable.

Difficult situations mark the development of certain qualities in us. Explain with reference to the story of the lost child in 100-150 words.

The child visits a fair with his parents. He obediently remains with them, at the same time, looking at the shops that he passes by. There are toys that he likes. But he remains quiet for he knows his demands would be rejected. He gets diverted to the>fluttering of bees and butterflies. He doesn’t need money to enjoy their buzzing. Again the sweetmeats, garlands and balloons attract the child but he knows very well that his parents would refuse to buy them. This maturity in a child is a rare quality. He has understood that his parents would never give into his childish demands. So, they find one excuse or another for refusing them. Later when the child gets lost, he finds that these objects which he desired, no more attract him.

Finding his parents’ whereabouts stands in top priority. So, he could not be pacified by the man who offers to help him. This situation of getting lost-goes a long way for the child to re&lise the importance of his parents. All the while, as he went behind butterflies, the thought of his parents being behind him gave him confidence. Once he realises they are not around, he gets agitated. The incident would teach a good lesson to the child in discipline, that he is not to get carried away by materialistic things when he should be contented with the love and care of his parents.

We come across many snake-charmers during our day-to-day’s life. Even some people have monkeys, bear or some other animal or bird with them to earn their livings. We do not support this system. Every living being has his right to freedom. We cannot snatch anyone’s freedom for our greed. No one can live happily in slavery. Even they are not fed up to their diet. This is a big unjustice to these animals which should be stopped.

Suddenly, his mother pointed out to the flowering mustard-field swept across miles and miles. The child got attracted to the dragon flies bustling about on their grand purple wings intercepting the flight of a black bee or butterfly. The child followed the butterfly as it evaded him fluttering and flapping up into the air. Then, the boy ran towards his parents gaily. He walked ahead of the insects for a while. His parents sat down to relax for a while in a grove. They called the child once again. He ran to them but before he could reach them he was fascinated by young flowers falling from a tree. He began to gather them. Then he began to play there till his parents decided to move on. Now they were quite near the fair. They held the child by the hand and moved to the entrance of the fair.

As they neared the fair it became more and more crowded. The child was both fascinated and frightened by the crowd.

What the child wanted at the Fair :
At the gate of the fair there was a sweetmeat seller’s shop. Mouth watering sweets decorated with gold and silver leaves fascinated the child. He had a great desire to have burfi which was his favourite sweet. He muttered almost to himself, ‘I want burfi’.

But he did not wait for his parents’ reply. In the heart of his heart he knew his parents would never agree to buy burfi for him. They would say that he was greedy. So he moved on. A flower seller was selling garlands. The child wanted to have one. But he knew that his parents would refuse to buy such cheap stuff. So he moved on. A balloon seller was selling beautiful coloured balloons. The child was fascinated by their rainbow glory. He wanted to have them all but suppressed his desire. He knew his parents would say he was too old to play with balloons. So he walked away. He saw a snake- charmer playing his flute to the cobra. But he did not stop there because his parents had forbidden him to hear cheap music.

At the round-about – child lost parents:
A round-about was in full swing and men and women were screaming hysterically as they went round and round. The child stopped there. He had a strong desire to have a joyride. He could not suppress his desire and made a bold request, “I want to go on the round-about.” But there was no reply. He looked up. But his parents were not there. Now the child realized that he had been lost. He gave out a loud cry, “Father, Mother”. But there was no reply. He ran here and there looking for them. But he could find them nowhere. There was a temple and almost everybody seemed to be going towards it. The child decided to look for his parents there. The place was too crowded but the child made his way through the peoples’ legs, calling his parents. He was kicked to and fro by hundreds of feet. He might have been trampled underfoot if he had not given out a loud, piercing shriek.

A kind man rescued child :
A kind man stooped and lifted the child in his arms. He brought him out of the crowd and asked him whose child he was. The child wept bitterly and cried, “I want my mother, I want my father.”

The kind man tried to humour the child but failed:
The man tried to soothe him. He took him to the round-about and asked, “Will you have a ride on the horse ?” But the child looked the other way and cried, “I want my father, I want my mother.” The snake charmer was still playing his flute. The man said, “Listen to the sweet music, child.” But the child did not stop crying. The man offered to buy the child a balloon, a garland and sweets. Text (Page 1): It was the festival of spring. From the wintry shades of narrow lanes and alleys emerged a gaily clad humanity. Some walked, some rode on horses, others sat, being carried in bamboo and bullock carts. One little boy ran between his father’s legs, brimming over with life and laughter.

He hurried towards his parents, his feet obedient to their call, his eyes still lingering on the receding toys. As he came to where they had stopped to wait for him, he could not suppress the desire of his heart, even though he well knew the old, cold stare of refusal in their eyes.

His father looked at him red-eyed, in his familiar tyrant’s way. His mother, melted by the free spirit of the day was tender and, giving him her finger to hold, said, “Look, child, what is before you !”

Text (Page 2): A group of dragon-flies were bustling about on their gaudy purple wings, intercepting the flight of a lone black bee or butterfly in search of sweetness from the flowers. The child followed them in the air with his gaze, till one of them would still its wings and rest, and he would try to catch it. But it would go fluttering, flapping, up into the air, when he had almost caught it in his hands. Then his mother gave a cautionary call: “Come, child, come, come on to the footpath.”

Text (Page 2): A shower of young flowers fell upon the child as he entered the grove, and, forgetting his parents, he began to gather the raining petals in his hands. But lo! he heard the cooing of doves and ran towards his parents, shouting, “The dove ! The dove!” The raining petals dropped from his forgotten hands.

“Come, child, come !” they called to the child, who had now gone running in wild capers round the banyan tree, and gathering him up they took the narrow, winding footpath which led to the fair through the mustard fields.

But he half knew as he begged that his plea would not be heeded because his parents would say he was greedy. So without waiting for an answer he moved on. . He went towards the basket where the flowers lay heaped and half murmured, “I want that garland.” But he well knew his parents would refuse to buy him those flowers because they would say that they were cheap. So without waiting for an answer, he moved on.

At little distances on the green grass he could see, through his filmy eyes, men and women talking. He tried to look intently among the patches of bright yellow clothes, but there was no sign of his father and mother among these people, who seemed to laugh and talk just for the sake of laughing and talking.

The man tried to soothe him by taking him to the roundabout. “Will you have a ride on the horse ?” He gently asked as he approached the ring. The child’s throat tore into a thousand shrill sobs and he only shouted : “I want my mother, I want my father!”

The child turned his eyes from the flying balloons and just sobbed. “I want my mother, I want my father!”

Thinking to humour his disconsolate charge by a gift of sweets, the man took him to the counter of the sweet shop. “What sweets would you like, child ?” he asked. The child turned his face from the sweet shop and only sobbed, “I want my mother, I want my father!”
