The intruder breaks into the cottage of Gerrard in order to kill him and take on his identity, but, he is victimised by his own wickedness. What Gerrard does, is nothing but self-defence. If he had not made an attempt to save himself, the intruder would not only have murdered him, but also would have taken on his identity. He might have repeated the same behavioural pattern, harming other harmless, innocent people as well. The plot of the play “If I Were You” by Douglas James, clearly reveals that the intruder is a criminal. He has murdered a policeman, and is now trying to escape the police. Besides, he tells Gerrard that even if he murders him as well, it won’t make much of a difference because he can’t be hanged twice. So if such a person is cheated by someone else, it is fully justifiable.

Criminals like the intruder should be punished. They do not want to change themselves. They are selfish and self-centred. They want to achieve their motives in whatever way possible and are not bothered about others. The intruder killed a policeman and hence, was escaping from the police. He looked like Gerrard and hence, planned to kill him in order to take on his identity and escape from the clutches of the police. However, Gerrard used his presence of mind, intelligence and wit in getting the criminal caught and saved himself. Such types of criminals who target others in order to save themselves should never be spared. Small time criminals, however, may be given a chance to improve themselves if they show repentance and regret for the deed done. Often, people turn to crime due to circumstances, and unlike hardcore criminals, rue their actions. Thus, they ought to be given a second chance.

The statement stands true with reference to the story “If I Were You”. The intruder broke into the cottage of Gerrard in order to kill him and take on his identity. He carried a revolver in order to scare him. Although, he could have killed him immediately, he didn’t do so because he wanted to know more about him (Gerrard) and learn how to speak like him. He wanted to do so in order to impersonate him. He had already killed a policeman and was likely to be hanged for it. So, in order to escape the clutches of the police. he didn’t mind killing Gerrard. His aim was to fulfil his selfish motive in whatever way possible. However, his motives remained unfulfilled as he was arrested due to the presence of mind, imagination and wit of Gerrard. To be selfless, one must be kind, compassionate and generous. Gerrard engages intruder in talk :
The Intruder wants Gerrard to answer a few questions but Gerrard engages him in useless discussion in order to gain time. He wants to outsmart the Intruder, who has come to know many things about Gerrard from the conversation of two persons known to Gerrard. He discloses a bit of his plan but Gerrard is wise enough to understand it fully. He keeps him engaged in conversation just to act at an opportune moment. Then he tells the Intruder that the police is after him also. So, both of them should go away soon as the police could come there anytime. He asks the Intruder to be careful and save himself.

Gerrard locks up the Intruder :
Gerrard opens the door. As he does so, the Intruder leans forward to inspect what is there outside. Now Gerrard cleverly pushes the Intruder into the cupboard and locks him inside.

Rings up friend :
Then he asks his friend on the telephone to send in the sergeant. He intends to hand over the Intruder to him. Meanwhile, Gerrard tells his friend that he has got an amusing incident for his next play.

Text (Page 138): SCENE: A small cottage interior. There is an entrance back right (which may be curtained). Another door to the left must be a practical door. The furniture is simple, consisting of a small table towards the left, a chair or two, and a divan rather upstage on the right. On the table is a telephone.

Intruder : Now listen here. I’ve got this all planned. I did a job in town. Things went wrong and I killed a crop. Since then I’ve done nothing but dodge.

Intruder : It brought me to Aylesbury. That’s where I saw you in the car. Two other people saw you and started to talk. I listened. It looks like you’re a bit queer kind of a mystery man.

Intruder : It’s a bag all right and this is a gun all right. What’s all this?
Gerrard : That’s a disguise outfit; false moustaches and what not. Now do you believe me?
Intruder : (musingly) I don’t know.
Gerrard : For God’s sake clear that muddled head of yours let’s go. Come with me in the car. I can use you. If you find it’s a frame, you’ve got me in the car, and you’ve still got your gun.
Intruder : May be you’re right.
Gerrard : Then don’t waste time. (Goes and picks up hat and bag.)
Intruder : Careful, boss, I’m watching you.

घुसपैठिया : हो सकता है कि तुम ठीक कहते हो। जैरार्ड : तो समय नष्ट मत करो। (जाकर अपना टोप व बैग उठाता है) घुसपैठिया : बॉस सावधान रहना, मैं तुम्हें देख रहा हूँ।

Text (Page 144): (Gerrard opens door and steps away. Intruder leans forward to inspect it, with his side towards Gerrard, but with the revolver ready. As he turns his head, Gerrard gives him a push into the cupboard knocking the revolver out of his hand. He slams the door and locks it, picks up the revolver and goes to the phone, where he stands with the gun pointed at the cupboard door.)
