Question 30.
Read the following source carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
We get a glimpse of lively discussions and debates from Buddhist texts, which mention as many as 64 sects or schools of thought. Teachers travelled from place to place, trying to convince one another as well as laypersons, about the validity of their philosophy or the way they understood the world.

Debates took place in the kutagarashala, a hut with a pointed roof – or in groves where travelling mendicants halted. If a philosopher succeeded in convincing one of his rivals, the followers of the latter also became his disciples. So support for any particular sect could grow and shrink over time.

Many of these teachers, including Mahavira and the Buddha, questioned the authority of the Vedas. They also emphasized individual agency- suggesting that men and women could strive to attain liberation from the trials and tribulations of worldly existence.

This was in marked contrast to the Brahmanical position, wherein, as we have seen, an individual’s existence was thought to be determined by his or her birth in a specific caste or gender.
(i) What glimpses are provided by the Buddhist exits as per the passage?
(ii) Who challenged the authority of Vedas?
(iii) How the men and women can attain liberation as per the philosophers?

Question 31.
Read the following source carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
About a tank constructed in Vijayanagara, Paes wrote: The king made a tank at the mouth of two hills so that all the water which comes from either one side or the other collects there, and, besides this, water comes to it from more than three leagues (approximately 15 kilometres) by pipes which run along with the lower parts of the range outside. This water is brought from a lake which itself overflows into a little river.

The tank has three large pillars handsomely carved with figures; these connect above with certain pipes by which they get water when they have to irrigate their gardens and rice fields. In order to make this tank the said king broke down a hill. In the tank I saw so many people at work that there must have been fifteen or twenty thousand men, looking like ants.
(i) Where the tank was constructed?
(ii) What were the sources of water for the tanks?
(iii) What were the advantages of constructing tanks?

Question 32.
Read the following source carefully and answer the questions that follow: [4]
Many groups in Britain were opposed to the monopoly that the East India Company had over trade with India and China. These groups wanted a revocation of the Royal Charter that gave the Company this monopoly. An increasing number of private traders wanted a share in the Indian trade, and the industrialists of Britain were keen to open up the Indian market for British manufactures.

Many political groups argued that the conquest of Bengal was benefiting only the East India Company but not the British nation as the whole. Information about Company misrule and maladministration was hotly debated in Britain and incidents of the greed and corruption of Company official were widely publicized in the press.
(i) Why there was opposition to the monopoly of the East India Company?
(ii) What were the views of the political groups concerning the East India Company?
(iii) How did the press work in the disfavor of the East India Company in Bengal?
