Reading Skills (20 marks)

1. The titanic, in its watery grave, is a great museum of human history and is at risk of being lost forever because of curious voyagers and treasure hunters, fears Bob Ballard, who first discovered the remains of the iconic ship in 1985. Famous for discovering the great ship, Ballard is a former US Navy Officer and a professor of oceanography.

2. “Titanic is a museum of human history without door and guard. I am deeply concerned about not only the Titanic but all the ancient history that is now at risk. If we cannot save this iconic ship, then there is a very little hope we can save ancient ships.

The world should realise that you don’t have to go down and take everything and you do not have to do a treasure hunt. This is a common heritage of all pf us and if we really want to take steps to preserve human history in the ocean, we need to start with Titanic,” Ballard said in a telephonic interview from London.

3. Ballard, as part of a tie-up, is presenting a documentary called “Save the Titanic” on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the great ship – April 15, 1912. The ship and her fate continue to fascinate, largely because of the horror that took place that night, with 1,522 passengers and crew losing their lives.

4. Ballard says that despite being on the ocean floor for 100 years, the ship is full of human footprints. “You will find pairs of shoes everywhere. The sea and the life below has claimed everything but they do not know what to do with shoes so you will find a pair of mother’s shoes next to her little daughter and that’s their gravestone. At her wreckage, we almost felt that we were surrounded by the lifeboats of all the people that were in the water at that spot”.

5. Ballard says that the fate of Titanic continues to fascinate so many years after it sank because it is “irony personified in history”. “The story has all the ingredients to make it timelessly fascinating. You have this revolutionary ship that’s unsinkable and carrying a cross-section of people in society. And then, it goes and hits an iceberg and sinks on its maiden journey. It’s an irony personified in history”.

6. Talking about his discovery, which came after great research and 75 years later, Ballard, says it was a somber moment went they first spotted the boiler of the Titanic. “In the 90s, advanced technology gave us double diving capabilities in the Atlantic Ocean. I knew that the Titanic was sitting at almost 12,000 feet. What led me to her discovery was a simple technique that I followed. We decided to look for the debris trail instead of the ship”.

7. Ballard says the ship, if preserved well and not subjected to constant submarine journeys, will last for a long time on the Atlantic floor. “The deep sea, because of its darkness, its cold temperatures and its great pressure, creates a high state of preservation. With a little caution, we can protect the Titanic for future generations to visit.”

8. Ballard has also connected to the people of Belfast, who refused to talk about the tragedy. “The ship’s construction took place at Belfast. After the tragedy, families of the workers refused to talk about it because of the shame and sadness in the loss of life involved”. (Source: archive. Indian express. com)

Virtual internships got three times more applications than in-office, since a large chunk of students were the ones already enrolled in various courses, or preferred working from home.

4. Internship portals have sprung up in the last three to four years and many of them already report healthy traffic per month. Reports suggest that on an average, an internship portal company has around 200,000-plus students and some 8,000 companies registered on it. It gets around two lakhs visits online every month.

The Managing Director of a leading executive search firm says that though these web platforms are working as an effective bridge between the industry and students, most established companies are still reluctant to take too many interns on board for obvious reasons. (355 words)

Subject: Increasing rate of road accidents
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I would like to share my views regarding the rash driving and over-speeding vehicles which are causing road accidents every now and then. It is disturbing to see the sudden flood of accidents in the past few days and all are the result of over speeding. It seems as if traffic rules are being sidelined and people have no fear of challan or any mishap.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Set 4 with Solutions

They violate the rules as if the rules are meant to be broken. In spite of speed detectors and interceptors at many places, the people ignore them and often jump red lights or drive at a very high speed. As a consequence, the innocent walkers, children and old people often fall prey to them. This is high time when traffic police should take strict action and instead of levying heavy challan, they should cancel the driving license of such motorists. I hope the concerned authorities would look forward into the matter and take a prompt action to avoid road accidents.
Thanking you
Your sincerely

4. Attempt ANY ONE from A and B given below.
A. The increasing prices of essential commodities like gas, pulses, vegetables, etc., are a matter of worry for all. Write an article on the topic ‘Rising Prices in the market’ in 120-150 words. You are Mohan/ Mohini. You may use the cues given below along with your own ideas.

  • Varying demand and supply proportion
  • Increasing population
  • Government’s limp policies
  • Need of stabilizing prices

Answer:
Rising Prices in the Market
By Mohan/Mohini
The rising prices of almost all the things including essential commodities have become a regular common feature nowadays. The rise in prices is basically due to the increasing population and also partly due to varying demand and supply proportion.

Another reason for rapidly increasing prices is due to the lack of effective measures taken by government departments to check malpractices of unscrupulous traders who are responsible for manipulated shortages and charge huge prices from needy persons.

A lot of hoarding and black marketing is taking place. India is a country where majority of the population resides in villages and most of the people live below poverty line, therefore, these poor people can’t even afford the basic commodities. Money has lost its value and the worst affected is the middle-class, especially salaried working class who have a fixed income. They have to maintain a reasonable standard of living and at the same time, manage to pay increasing prices for the essential commodities.

The time has come that the government should have a regular effective system to control on the rising prices of at least essential commodities and life saving drugs. Black marketeers, hoarders and profiteers must be brought to book. Overpopulation should be checked. More fair-price shops should be opened in different localities. The people who buy things in black should be punished.

Production of food should be increased to meet the demand. Sincere efforts should be made to stabilise prices of essential commodities. Evils of corruption bribery, smuggling and illegal gratification that are deep-rooted in the society, must be rooted out.

Say No to Polythene Bags
A Report by: Sanjay/Sanjana
Last week, I joined a campaign organised in my locality to create awareness among people to stop using polythene bags. The M.L.A. of the area led the campaign. Besides, there were many elite members of society who had come to give their tremendous support to this programme. The campaign carried many activities. As usual, the programme started with the motivational and informative lecture from the M.L.A.

CBSE Sample Papers for Class 12 English Set 4 with Solutions

He told that the 21st century is surrounded by the numerous polythene bags which not only cause a waste disposal problem but also counted as non-biodegradable waste because they cannot be decomposed by the bacteria. We should pledge to say no to polythene bags and insist on using paper bags.

We also have other better choices over polythene bags. Use of polythene bags creates irreparable and hazardous environmental pollution. It seems as if we are doing it deliberately and do not want to save our environment for the future generations.

He further added that polythene bags cause drainage problems and make the city ugly. About 80% of the total garbage is made out of polythene bags. Afterwards we all took the oath that we would not use polybags.Small plants were distributed to the people in beautiful decorative pots. It seemed to be a very successful campaign.

VII. Answer ANY ONE of the following in about 120-150 words each.
i. The prose selections, The Rattrap and Indigo brings out the ‘fall in character’ of humans due to hardships faced in life. To regain self- respect one has to mend his debased ways which is only possible if there is no hesitancy to root out evil, personal or social. Imagine that you have been invited to make the students strong enough in character, not to lose strength of character against anyone, howsoever he/she/they might be powerful.
Answer:
Dear All,
Today I welcome all the students of XII standard to attend an event called ‘International Character Building Day’. Let me draw your attention to two chapters from your book Flamingo, The Rattrap and Indigo. The intention of these two chapters is to create awareness of how ‘good social behaviour’ and ‘down-to-earth’ empathy with the benumbed and poverty ridden people can work wonders for all, individually and collectively.

For it is ‘individual character’ and ‘collective responsibility’ that makes a strong nation. While I was going through the story of Rattrap I really came to know that how very often we are beguiled by short cut to success. The methods and tactics involved are unfortunately unethical for most of those who take recourse to unprincipled ways.
For instance, the rattrap maker, falls in disgrace to think that the world is a big rattrap which sets bait for people. So he starts to ensnare gullible people in his trap to earn quick money.

He lets himself get stuck in a trap that could land him in jail. Had it not been for the good natured Edla, he wouldn’t have been able to reform himself. Much in the same way it was the tenacity of purpose of a relatively unknown peasant who accompanied Gandhiji everywhere to make him agree to visit his district Champaran.

It was the strength of character of the peasant and Gandhiji that help the crushed and fear-stricken peasants to make a spontaneous demonstration that made the powerful British bow to their demands. It helped the peasants to get aware of their rights. A wonderful strength of character, both on an individual basis, as well as collective basis comes out beautifully in the story.

The moral is to be brave and steadfast against oppressors. That is the central idea of these two anecdotes. Never give in to injustice, whatever be the circumstances.
Wish you a good day children. Have a nice day.

Answer:

Pablo Neruda: Steal ? Why steal ?!!
Saheb-e-Alam: She doesn’t have money to buy. I am from a family of ragpickers…
Pablo Neruda: Can’t you even afford to buy one, what a pity!
Saheb-e-Alam: (A bit ashamed, blushing) Sir, it is not lack of money but a tradition to stay barefoot,
Pablo Neruda: (to himself) Oh my god, an excuse to explain away a perpetual state of poverty,..what a pity!
Saheb-e-Alam: You said something, sir?
Pablo Neruda: Oh no! Er, do you belong to this place, dear?
Saheb-e-Alam: No sir, I am from Bangladesh.
Pablo Neruda: How is that possible?
Saheb-e-Alam: (scratching his head) My mother can tell
Pablo Neruda: Can I meet your mother?
Saheb-e-Alam: (scared) Are you from the police, sir?
Pablo Neruda: No, why do you ask? [at this point Saheb-e-Alam starts to run away]

VIII. Answer ANY ONE of the following in about 120-150 words.
i. In The Enemy we are introduced to Dr. Sadao Hoki who has an encounter with an American soldier who N
is his enemy and also a patient in need of doctor. Imagine you were Dr. Hoki and describe in 120-150 words how would you react if you were in a position similar to his.
Answer:
The situation of Dr. Hoki described in The Enemy is a particularly disturbing situation to be in. The American soldier that was found by the Japanese is an immediate enemy of the doctor as well as his country and it is the time of war. Even normal relations are disturbed during times of war. So it was obvious that Dr. Hoki should hand over the soldier to the Japanese army and show loyalty to his country.

If I were in Dr. Hold’s place, I would have done the same as him and saved the soldier. My human kindness would overcome my patriotism because before anything I am a human being. Sure it would not be an easy decision to make in the heat of the moment. I must be confused like Dr. Hoki too but eventually, I am sure humanity would win over other duties.
