I. Read the passage given below.
1. Power foods are foods that provide rich levels of nutrients like fibre, potassium and minerals. With people becoming increasingly health-conscious today, a lot of fitness trainers encourage their clients to include these foods in their daily diet to increase muscle development. There are various ways of incorporating power foods in your daily diet. Of course, the key to enjoying power foods is proper preparation of these foods, the use of season-fresh foods, and in identifying your choice of flavour among power foods.

2. Some of the recommended power food combinations are those that are prepared in our kitchens on a regular basis. Take, for instance, the combination of chickpeas and onions. This combination is a powerful source of iron which is required by the body to transport oxygen to its various parts.

Iron deficiency can lead to anaemia, fatigue, brain fog and tiredness. A study by the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry says that sulphur compounds in onion and garlic help in the absorption of iron and zinc from chickpeas. The combination is a hit with teenagers who need to be diligent about getting iron in their diet. A quick way to prepare this power food is to make a chickpea salad with chopped onions, chaat masala and cilantro.

3. Another favourite combination with power food takers is yoghurt and bananas. This makes for a perfect snack after a rough game of football. Exercising bums glucose and thus lowers blood sugar. Yoghurt is packed with proteins that help preserve muscle mass, and bananas are packed with carbohydrates that help in refuelling energy and preventing muscle soreness. A quick and easy recipe with bananas is a banana smoothie topped with cool yoghurt.

4. Among beverages, green tea is the best source of catechins that are effective in halting oxidative damage to cells. According to researchers at Purdue University, adding a dash of lemon juice to green tea makes the catechins even more easily absorbable by the body.

These dogs have enabled them to non-invasively access a vast amount of genetic and physiological information which is used to tackle conservation problems around the world. Such information has proved vital for determining the causes and consequences of human disturbances on wildlife as well as the actions needed to mitigate such impacts.

5. The ideal detection dog is extremely energetic with an excessive play drive. These dogs will happily work all day long, motivated by the expectation of a ball game as a reward for sample detection. CBSE Sample Papers for Class 10 English Set 3 with Solutions 3
Answer:
A. The map shows median age which fits out as an important single indicator of the age distribution and ‘midpoint’ of a population. There is the same number of people who are older than the median age as there are younger than it.

Countries with aging populations often end up with high budget shortages and vulnerable economic growth because there are too few workers to support the many retirees. Countries with extremely young populations often end up in political chaos as everything depends on the employment rate. Right now, Germany and Japan have the world’s oldest populations, with a median age of 46.1. Niger has the world’s youngest population, with a median age of, shockingly, 15.1.

B. Given below is a newspaper report on the state of cancer prevailing in India. You have been asked to write an analytical paragraph on ‘Cancer-a Silent Killer’ Taking information from the clipping given below together with your ideas, write this paragraph in about 150-200 words.

In India, cities are more cancer-prone than rural areas. In the early 1990s, we expected one out of 10-15 urban Indians to get cancer in their lifetime, that is every second or third family would have to face this disease. This is partly due to high levels of benzene in the air and also that the metros are exposed to high levels of pesticides in their foods. To check the steady growth of cancer in the country, the Government shall have to give priority to preventive action. At the same time measures to undertake improvement in facilities for the treatment of cancer shall have to be adopted.
Answer:
Our urban population is becoming more and more cancer-prone than the rural population. Sadly, every tenth person is likely to have cancer due to the high level of benzene in the air and the high levels of pesticides in the foods. The contact of highly radio-active omissions of cell phones and such devices have also contributed to this grave danger to the human population. To check this menace of cancer, the Government shall have to give top-most priority to preventive actions. More facilities like Diagnostic Centres and Cancer Hospitals need to be created for the treatment of cancer patients.

There is a dire need to contain this deadly disease by taking some urgent steps. First of all, we must ban the wide use of pesticides. Excessive use of pesticides is harmful to human health. In developed countries, much emphasis is being laid on organic manure instead of fertilizer. So, we have to introduce organic manure.

In addition to this, the crop pattern needs to be changed. Besides this, a kind of public awareness program will have to be undertaken. The public is to be awakened towards the growth of cancer and its easy detection. This would surely help in the containment of this disease at its initial stages. If cancer is detected and treated at the early stages, it can’t be fatal.

Seagull: I have never known fear the way when I had to jump of the cliff to fly, but I am glad I did it.

Trees: We had been locked inside our homes and mustered up courage to finally break free, and we too are glad we took this step.

Seagull: I was so afraid of taking this step, that I was dreading and delaying it, but all I had to do to kill – that fear was to just jump.

Trees: Our instincts are never wrong. If we hadn’t moved out, the forests would have remained barren and bare. All the life of mankind depended on us.

Seagull: And can you imagine if a creature with wings wouldn’t have dared to fly? It would have all been for nothing!

Trees: We were all bom to fulfil our purposes, and the only thing stopping us from achieving them is the fear and limits we put in our mind.

Seagull: And sometimes all we need to combat these limits is something as simple as jumping.

Trees: Or even breaking windows for that matter!

(ii) “Some say the world will end in fire, Some say in ice.”
If you had to use the message of the given quote from Robert Frost’s poem (Fire and Ice) to portray the wild nature of Natalya’s and Lomov’s characters (The Proposal), what would you include in your answer? Also, evaluate why it might be difficult for them to understand the notion.
Answer:
The poem lays out the destructive facets of both fire and ice, where they both have the power to end the world. The elements are opposite to each other, but similar in a way that they both are capable of devastation. Fire is symbolic of greed and desires, while ice signifies hate and contempt. They both act differently, but the ultimate outcome is vile.

Natalya and Lomov may boast of being better than one another, or they may leave no stone unturned, to show how each one is a step ahead, they both had fragile egos and turbulent personalities. They both couldn’t stand harmless jibes or shut up to avoid certain avoidable situations. Their proposal was no 1 short of a satire and at the end, after all the quarrelling, they both agreed on the proposal, solely because a huge sum of money was at stake. This level of greed and contempt aptly puts them equal to fire and ice. And the obvious part is that they both would be too proud to understand this and introspect.
