This is the first of three chapters focusing on factor markets , that is , on markets in which households supply factors of , capital , and natural by firms . Just as there are some situations in the analysis of markets for goods and services for which such an assumption is inappropriate , so there are some cases in which the assumption is inappropriate for labor markets . We examine such cases in a later chapter . In this chapter , however , we will find that the assumption of perfect competition can give us important insights into the forces that determine wages and employment levels for workers . If people decide they value leisure more highly , they will work fewer hours at each wage , and the supply curve for labor will shift to the left .
